Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to focus on the special sensory organs. The special sensory organ for vision is eye. The anterior, transparent outer layer to iris is the cornea. Cornea has five layers. The inner layer of eyeball is retina. It is the nervous layer. Retina has the photoreceptors, which are rods and cones. The axons of ganglion cells of retina collectively form the optic nerve. External surface has the thin skin with hair follicles, sebaceous and sweat glands. Internal surface of the eyelid is lined by palpebral conjunctiva made by stratified columnar epithelium. Lacrimal gland is a serous gland. It is lobulated. Parenchymal cells are arranged in the form of acini.
