Abstract

This chapter discusses in detail common conditions for which patients are admitted to intensive care unit (ICU). The surgical ICU should be in close proximity to the recovery room of the operation theater complex. This allows easy transport of critically ill patients from the theater to ICU and the ICU staffs can provide coverage to the recovery room whenever needed. The design of the unit should take into consideration the integration and smooth functioning of three areas of activity. The importance of cleanliness cannot be overemphasized in ICU. The floor should be mopped 3–6 hourly with phenyl or soap water solution. Cleaning procedure should always be done after visiting hours.
