This chapter talks about the various types of sutures, their classification, characteristics and different types of sutures. Sutures are used to approximate the tissues to help in healing process. A suture should have a good tensile strength, should be non-allergic, easy to handle and should be easily available. Sutures can be natural or synthetic and absorbable or non-absorbable. They can also be multi-filamentous or mono-filamentous. A suture can be of variable lengths such as 45 cm, 70 cm, 90 cm, 110 cm, 180 cm and sizes such as more than 1, 1-0,2-0 etc. A suture pack provides information about the manufacturer, date of manufacturing, price of the suture, batch, suture code and expiry date of the suture. The needle that is used for suturing can be curved or straight, with a cutting edge, tips can be triangular, blunt or taper cut.
