Abstract

This chapter covers the various surgical interventions in the treatment related to head and neck region. Parotidectomy is a procedure of removal of parotid glands. This procedure has been indicated in the conditions such as pleomorphic adenoma, inflammatory diseases such as parotid abscess and any tumour arising from superficial lobe. It is mainly of three types: superficial, radical and total. It is contraindicated in patients who have multiple parotid cysts and are HIV positive. It can cause bleeding, injury to the facial nerve and Frey’s syndrome. Thyroidectomy is a procedure of removal of thyroid. It is indicated in patients who have a potential malignancy and patients who have multinodular goitre with pressure symptoms. It is performed under general anaesthesia and is mainly of four types: total, hemi, nearly-total and sub-total thyroidectomy. It can cause neck hematoma, injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve and wound infections. Tracheostomy is a procedure that is carried out in cases of upper airway obstruction, respiratory failure and in comatose patients following severe head injury. It is performed under local anaesthesia and is mainly of three types: high, mid and low. It can cause haemorrhage, injury to esophagues and tracheal stenosis.
