Abstract

Vault prolapse is defined as the descent of vaginal vault below a point 2 cm less than the total vaginal length above the plane of hymen. Reported incidence varies from 2% to 43%. It is 11.6% of hysterectomies performed for prolapse and 1.8% for other benign diseases. The number of cases of vault prolapse is going to increase as longevity is increased with the improvement of quality of life in old age and growing interest in maintaining the capacity for sexual activity beyond the menopause. The prevention of vault prolapse at hysterectomy is vault support and enterocoele repair. McCall culdoplasty, colposacropexy and sacrospinous fixation are the best treatment options.
