Abstract

This chapter describes the basic principles in operative hysteroscopy. Hysteroscopy has revolutionized the diagnosis and management of intrauterine pathologies and today operative hysteroscopy is considered, in majority, a continuation of diagnostic hysteroscopy. The revolutionary changes in instrumentation and techniques have helped in classifying surgical hysteroscopy as operative hysteroscopy, and resectoscopic surgery. This chapter covers the contraindications for operative hysteroscopic surgery (absolute and relative) and operative hysteroscopy. Contraindications for operative hysteroscopic surgery include pelvic inflammatory disease, acute cervicovaginitis, severe metrorrhagia, pregnancy, inappropriate instrumentation and technology, and inadequate surgical skill and experience.
