Abstract

This chapter describes the hysteroscopic removal of intrauterine contraceptive devices and foreign bodies. A variety of foreign bodies have been described in literature in the genitourinary tract, from young girls to geriatric population. Common foreign bodies encountered include tampon, pins, seeds, forgotten pessaries with presentation being vaginal discharge to infertility. Foreign bodies are less common in uterine cavity than vagina and are less frequently seen in older women than prepubertal and premenarchal girls. Most of the time such retained foreign bodies’ remains asymptomatic and detected accidently as a work up for infertility or routine ultrasound assessment. However, sometimes it may result in excessive vaginal discharge, intermenstrual bleeding or abnormal uterine bleeding.
