Abstract

The increase in multiple births during the past 30 years has been well documented. Making multiple gestations one of the most common high-risk conditions encountered by obstetricians. Twin birth rates have raised 70% from 1980 to 2004. But in 2004, the rate is almost stable at 32.1/1000. This is mainly due to refreshments of assisted reproduction technologies and limitations of number of embryo transfer in In vitro fertilization (IVF). Twins can be monozygotic (Mz) or dizygotic (DZ). Zygotic refers to the genetic makeup of the twin pregnancy and chronicity indicates the pregnancy’s placental composition. Chronicity is determined by the mechanism of twining and in Mz twins by the timing of embryo division. Diagnosis of multiple gestations, types of monochorionic twin, monochorionic monoamniotic, conjoint twin, and maternal risk in multiple pregnancy are covered in this chapter.
