Abstract

The chapter aims to give an insight into the role of urodynamic study in stress urinary incontinence (SUI), which is a condition of involuntary loss of urine on effort, physical exertion, sneezing or coughing that is often, bothersome to the patient and frequently affects the quality of life. The evaluation in women with symptoms of SUI involves history taking. The history should include questions about the type of incontinence (e.g. stress, urge, mixed), precipitating events, frequency of occurrence, severity, pad use, and effect of symptoms on activities of daily living. Questions should be asked to assess symptoms related to bladder storage and emptying functions. Urodynamic investigations are an essential component in the management of women who present with lower urinary tract symptoms. If initial conservative management is unsuccessful or surgical treatment is anticipated then, objective urodynamic studies using simple or multichannel cystometrics may be indicated. Additionally, surgical therapy may be modified if urodynamic study reveals parameters consistent with intrinsic sphincter deficiency.
