Abstract

The chapter emphasizes on the problem of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) which affects women of all age groups. The lifetime risk of undergoing an operation for POP is estimated to be around 11%. POP is not a life-threatening condition but can significantly impair the quality of life of the individual. Many risk factors can lead to POP such as prolonged labor, instrumental delivery, multiparity, obesity, physical labor over many years and genetic and familial predisposition. Conservative management of POP includes lifestyle interventions, pelvic floor exercises and pessaries. Surgical option for the management of POP is the presumed definitive management in prolapse. The chapter also covers apical prolapse, uterus preserving surgeries, anterior and posterior wall POP, etc.
