Abstract

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) begins in majority of cases at the perimenarcheal period or before bone age reaches 16 years. However, it may go clinically unrecognized till a much later age due to ignorance of symptoms like irregular menstruation, hirsutism, etc. PCOS occurs due to abnormal metabolism of androgens and estrogen along with abnormality in control of androgen production. Peripheral insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia are also associated with PCOS. In PCOS, there are numerous potential mechanisms which could promote malignant disease including the prolonged anovulatory status and associated imbalance between androgen and estrogen action, insulin resistance and secondary hyperinsulinemia.
