Abstract

The chorionic villi have same genetic constitution as that of the fetus and therefore reflect chromosomal, biochemical and DNA configuration of the fetus. Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) enables early, first trimester prenatal diagnosis and is a suitable alternative to amniocentesis. Chorionic frondosum villi are mitotically active, and, therefore, is the preferred biopsy site. The surface of actively proliferating villi is punctuated by small buds consisting of an outer syncytial covering and a core of mitotically active cytotrophoblastic cells. This chapter covers the pre-procedure, sampling devices, sampling techniques, complications, and assesment of villi quality. Chorionic villi from chorionic frondosum are pinkish tissue and appear distinctive frond like. They are branching type and have bud-like projections on them.
