Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to introduce the endocrinology. This chapter is divided into short stature, precocious puberty, childhood hypothyroidism, and delayed puberty in children. Short stature is classically defined as height below −2 SD (third percentile) for age and gender within the population, or height below −2 SD (third percentile) below the midparental target height. Precocious puberty is defined as the appearance of secondary sexual characteristics before the age of 8 years in girls and 9 years in boys. Hypothyroidism is the most common endocrine problem encountered by a pediatrician. Hypothyroidism may be congenital or juvenile. This chapter provides the reader a simple algorithm-based approach to congenital hypothyroidism screening in a newborn baby, evaluation of congenital hypothyroidism, management of congenital hypothyroidism, evaluation of juvenile hypothyroidism and goiter, management of juvenile hypothyroidism in children and adolescents and general principles of dosing and therapy.
