Abstract

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines unsafe abortion as “a procedure for terminating an unintended pregnancy carried out either by persons lacking the necessary skills or in an environment that does not conform to minimal medical standards, or both”. Unsafe abortions are mostly performed by individuals lacking qualification and skills to perform induced abortions. Some of unsafe abortions are self-induced. This chapter covers the magnitude of the problem, causes of unsafe abortion, consequences of unsafe abortion, and prevention of unsafe abortion. Effective family planning and/or contraception are key to prevent unintended pregnancy and unsafe abortion.
