Abstract

Eclampsia is occurrence of convulsions in association with pre-eclampsia. Pre-eclampsia is a multisystem disorder that is associated with raised blood pressure (>140/90) taken 4–6 hours apart and with proteinuria beyond 20 weeks of pregnancy. It ranks second to hemorrhage as a specific, direct cause of maternal death. The HELLP syndrome is one of the serious complications in pregnancy characterized by hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets occurring in 0.5–0.9% of all pregnancies and in 10–20% of cases with severe pre-eclampsia. This chapter covers the incidence, pathophysiology, events, management, investigations and treatment, pritchard regimen, other regimens, which regimen to use, and antihypertensive medicines.
