Abstract

Premature rupture of membranes (PROM) is defined as spontaneous membrane rupture or rupture of chorioamnion that occurs before the onset of labor. Premature rupture of membranes is a significant obstetric problem. It complicates only 2% of pregnancies but is responsible for approximately 30% of all preterm deliveries and causes important perinatal morbidity and mortality, because it is associated with brief latency from membrane rupture till delivery, perinatal infection, and umbilical cord compression caused by oligohydramnios. This chapter covers the incidence, pathophysiology, etiology, diagnosis, and management of PROM. Diagnosis of PROM may be difficult either due to the presence of other fluids in vagina or because there is no fluid.
