Abstract

Toxoplasmosis is a protozoan disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii. Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular protozoan that can infect all mammals, who serve as intermediate hosts. Human infection with Toxoplasma gondii occurs worldwide. The infection is usually benign and asymptomatic in children and adults but can lead to severe complications if it occurs in an immunocompromised patient or in a developing fetus. This chapter covers the epidemiology, mode of transmission, toxoplasmosis in pregnancy, routes of transmission, diagnosis, prevention, preventive measures, and management. Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite. It has a complex life cycle with asexual reproduction taking place in diverse tissues of mammals and birds (secondary hosts) and sexual reproduction taking place in digestive epithelium of cats (primary hosts).
