Abstract

During pregnancy, the body undergoes multiple hormonal, immunological1 and metabolic changes which manifest as alterations on the skin. As a result of these changes, the skin develops certain physiological changes and sometimes pregnancy-specific skin conditions (dermatoses). Pregnancy also affects the pre-existing skin disorders while certain skin infections are common due to the immunological changes. To understand these clearly, the common skin disorders in pregnancy can be categorized broadly into three categories following as physiological skin changes, infections and pre-existing skin disorders, and pregnancy-specific dermatoses. Physiological skin changes is imperative to understand the normal physiological changes that occur during gestation as it helps in differentiating between pathological skin conditions and to avoid any undue therapeutic interventions. Pregnancy-specific dermatoses are a group of heterogeneous inflammatory pruritic disorders attributed to pregnancy. These disorders share a common symptom of pruritus. Some of these are distressing for the patient due to profound itching while some are associated with adverse maternal and fetal outcome.
