Abstract

Epilepsy is a neurological condition characterized by predisposition to generate seizures and its associated neurobiological, cognitive, psychological and social consequences. Epilepsy is defined as 2 or more unprovoked seizures without any immediate identifiable cause. Estimated incidence ranges from 0.5% to 2%. This chapter covers the etiopathogenesis, investigations, differential diagnosis, preconception counseling, pregnancy and disease progression, and management of pregnancy and delivery. Preconception counseling is extremely important on women known to have seizure disorders planning to conceive. Adequate seizure control before onset of pregnancy, good neurological evaluation, achieving seizure-free period of 2 years, planned conception, and folic acid supplementation for at least 3 months should be done.
