Abstract

Diabetes is the most common metabolic disorder in pregnancy, which is associated with an increased maternal and neonatal morbidity. Maternal diabetes may be pregestational (i.e. type 1 or type 2 diabetes diagnosed before pregnancy) or gestational (i.e. diabetes recognized during pregnancy). Perinatal outcome depends on the onset and duration of glucose intolerance and severity of the disease. Approximately 6–7% of all pregnancies are affected by abnormal glucose regulation out of which 90% are of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) while 10% are suffering from preexisting diabetes. This chapter covers the background and pathophysiology, problems in infants of diabetic mothers, and management. Optimal management of IDMs requires coordination between neonatologist and obstetrician in antenatal period followed by appropriate neonatal resuscitation.
