Abstract

This chapter focuses on postpartum management after gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). While the importance of antenatal screening for GDM is well-recognized, postpartum follow-up is not given its due importance. Health professionals and women with GDM are not aware about the significance of postpartum care. A woman with history of GDM is at increased risk for developing GDM in subsequent pregnancies. This chapter covers the postpartum screening for glycemic status, management of women with normoglycemia, management of women with prediabetes, breastfeeding, contraception, lifestyle modifications, and barriers and challenges faced for healthy postpartum lifestyle. The benefits of breastfeeding are not only seen on the infants but also on the health of the mother by preventing metabolic syndrome, preventing beta cell function, improving postnatal weight loss, reducing obesity.
