Abstract

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a vasoproliferative disorder of the retina and is an important cause of childhood blindness in preterm infants. There are multiple risk factors that are associated with the development and severity of ROP like low birth weight, early gestational age, multiple birth, hyperoxia, hypoxemia, hypercarbia, hypocarbia, respiratory distress syndrome, apnea, blood transfusions, sepsis, intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), prolonged parenteral nutrition, etc. This chapter covers the retinopathy of prematurity classification and retinopathy of prematurity screening and treatment. The International Classification of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ICROP) was devised by an international group of retinopathy of prematurity experts. This classification divided the ROP presentation by zones and stages, and thereby helped in communication between ophthalmologists and neonatologists.
