Abstract

Diabetic papillopathy is classically described as a disorder in which young juvenile diabetics develop transient edema of the optic disks with minimal impairment of the function of the optic nerve. A mild-to-moderate visual disturbance with mild visual field abnormality is often the presenting symptom. Accompanying diabetic retinopathy is usually not severe. This disorder was first described in 1971 by Lubow and Makley as pseudopapilledema of juvenile diabetes mellitus and was further characterized in three case series published in 1980. This chapter covers the case presentation, demographics, symptoms, examination, investigation, pathophysiology, differential diagnosis, prognosis, and management. The major differential diagnoses for diabetic papillopathy are papilledema and anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION).
