Abstract

The primary objective of dental suturing is to position and secure surgical flaps to promote healing. The sharper the incision and the less trauma inflicted on the wound, the greater the chances for primary healing. If tears or excessive damage occurs to the flaps the wound will heal by secondary intention. Sutures also aid in hemostasis. However before suturing all bleeding must be controlled, otherwise a hematoma may form underneath the flap leading to infection. Sutures help in covering the bone with the periosteal flap which is a very important function, otherwise the bone can get necrosed leading to prolonged healing. The suture needle usually used in the oral cavity is a 3/8th circle reverse cutting edge and the suture material is either monofilament nylon (nonresorbable) or polyglactin (PG) (resorbable). A detailed discussion on suturing instruments, suturing techniques, and surgeon’s knot has been provided in this chapter.
