Abstract

The shoulder complex is a term that is sometimes used to include all of the structures involved with motion of the shoulder. The shoulder complex mainly comprises of shoulder girdle and shoulder joint, which are two separate functional structures. Acromioclavicular joint and sternoclavicular joint are mainly two joints of the shoulder girdle. Acromioclavicular joint is formed between the acromion process of scapula and outer end of the clavicle which is a biaxial type of synovial joint. It has a 20–30° total gliding and rotational motion accompanying other shoulder girdle and shoulder joint motions. The sternoclavicular joint is a freely movable (multiaxial) arthrodial, ball and socket type of joint formed between the sternal end of the clavicle, and both sternum and first rib. A detailed discussion on the movements of shoulder girdle has been discussed in this chapter.
