Abstract

Dental practitioners are a community of healthcare professionals devoted to promoting oral health, disease prevention and restoring function, utility and present ability of the oral cavity. Dentists have two major roles as healthcare professionals and individuals operating a business. Dentists have opposing ethical demands. The best treatment is left to the informed choice of patient rather than the paternalistic attitude. Dental ethics is founded on sound medical ethics. Dental ethics is the branch of ethics that deals with moral issues in dental practices. Dental ethics is clearly related to biomedical ethics. The ethical values are fundamental to the practice of dentistry. This chapter describes the principles governing dental ethics and dental curriculum. The basic principles of bioethics for dentist’s are similar as for any healthcare professional and include—autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, and the justice.
