Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to focus on the doctor–patient relationship. Doctor-patient relationship forms the basis of medical ethics. Once formed, the doctor-patient relationship imposes legal obligation. It is to be noted that the doctor-patient relationship can be by both expressed and implied mutual consent. One of the vital forces retaining a relationship is the element of trust and trust is a fundamental element of the doctor-patient relationship. Trust manifest between a physician and a patient by constant interaction. Patient’s vulnerability and the need for care make them trust the physician. This chapter covers the duties of the physicians, duties of the patients, terminating the doctor-patient relationship, terms in doctor-patient relationship, sexual boundaries, and physician autonomy.
