Abstract

This chapter describes surgeon’s perspective on bioethics. The ethical problems arising from the requirement of patients’ informed consent are so diverse that it seems fit to familiarize students with bioethical issues long before the students themselves assume personal responsibility for the practice of medicine. Medical treatment has become a joint venture combining doctor and patient. The purpose of the informed consent principle is to enable the patient to consider, weigh and balance the benefits and disadvantages of the proposed medical treatment in order to make a rational choice either to undergo or refuse it. This chapter covers the therapeutic privilege, refusal of treatment, treatment of minors, parents’ refusal of a necessary treatment, informed consent for organ donation, and human immunodeficiency virus tests.
