Abstract

This chapter gives an overview on evolution of bioethics. In 5th century BC, a great Greek physician Hippocrates, tried separating the science of medicine from religion and God, and expressed that medicine is a science learnt by observation and mastered by practice. Hippocrates though tried separating religion and medicine, but made no attempt to alter the moral roots on which the practice of medicine is based on. Though bioethics emerged as a separate stream only after 1970, the historical review implies that it was always a part of medical practice. The term ‘Bioethics’ was coined by Van Rensselaer Potter, a biological scientist, in 1970. He by the term bioethics meant a new stream dedicated to the understanding of the moral dimension of new scientific invention. He coined this term when scientist across the world were expressing concerns over the social impact of the advanced social and technological inventions.
