Abstract

The term pregnancy of unknown location is a descriptive term which literally means a pregnancy whose possible location is not identified. Pregnancy in itself is a very efficient process provided it grows in its assigned place, uterus. Uterus is the only organ in female body which can enlarge it to accommodate baby and involutes later to its original size. When pregnancy grows somewhere else it can lead to many complications, there is lot of maternal morbidity and mortality associated if not tackled in time. Focus is not on localization of pregnancy, but on timely management of patient. This chapter covers the human chorionic gonadotropin levels and early pregnancy, role of ultrasound, ultrasound verses other imaging diagnostic modalities, possible outcomes of pregnancy of unknown locations, managing pregnancy of unknown locations, another marker for assessing wellbeing of pregnancy, and new markers for helping diagnosis of pregnancy of unknown location.
