Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to focus on the ultrasound in ovary syndrome. The term polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) was first used in the 1960s and gradually replaced its former name (Stein–Leventhal syndrome). Polycystic ovary syndrome is the most common endocrine disease in women of child-bearing age. The prevalence ranges from 9% when the NIH criteria are used to even 18% according to the guidelines of the Rotterdam consensus. The ultrasonographic assessment of the ovarian structure is associated with certain difficulties resulting from the size and shape of follicles, particularly the small ones with a diameter less than or equal to 2 mm or those adjacent to one another. Limitations of ultrasound criteria of polycystic ovary, methods of measuring the ovarian follicles in PCOS, ovarian volume assessment in PCOS, other parameters used in the assessment of PCOS vascularization of ovarian stroma, and variation in assesment in different PCOS group are covered in this chapter.
