Abstract

This chapter describes the surgery for ectopic and heterotopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy, a high-risk condition in which a fertilized ovum implants outside the uterine cavity, affects 1–2% of all pregnancies and poses a significant threat to women of reproductive age. It is a leading cause of maternal death during the first trimester of pregnancy. Recent advances in diagnosis and treatment have led to a 50% reduction in mortality rates since the 1980. Early detection has played a vital role in this reduction, and limited access to care is strongly associated with worse outcomes. This chapter covers the diagnosis, management of tubal pregnancy, management of cervical pregnancy, management of cesarean scar pregnancy, management of interstitial pregnancy, management of cornual pregnancy, ovarian ectopic pregnancy, abdominal pregnancy, and heterotopic pregnancy.
