Abstract

Reconstructive surgery for congenital cervicovaginal atresia with a functioning uterus performed at younger age may offer better prospect for restoration of menstrual and reproductive function. Pregnancy following surgical correction of congenital uterocervicovaginal atresia is very rare. Even the surgical treatment is controversial in cases where there is a functioning uterus with agenesis of cervix and vagina. Majority are in favor of hysterectomy because of the consequent risk of pelvic infection, endometriosis and recurrent stenosis following canalization of cervicovaginal atresia. This chapter covers the basis of surgical approach and materials and methods of diagnosis. The objective of therapeutic approach is to restore sexual and if possible the menstrual and reproductive functions.
