Abstract

This chapter seeks to familiarize the readers with the surgical principles of stoma. There are two types of stoma; one is temporary in which stoma can be reversed after it serves the purpose. The other is permanent where there is no bowel for anastomosis to the proximal segment and hence the end portion of the bowel has to be fashioned as a permanent stoma. Temporary stomas are used to divert the fecal stream from the distal bowel. Indications of temporary stomas are mentioned in this chapter. The stoma construction can be performed by different methods, i.e. through laparotomy, through laparoscopy, through a small incision at the site of stoma. A detailed discussion on methods of stoma construction has been provided in this chapter along with the relevant line diagrams which are very useful for understanding the procedure of stoma construction. Early closure associated with reduced hospital stay, bowel obstruction and medical complications but increased wound infection rates.
