After reading this chapter the reader will be familiarize with the complications caused by stoma surgery. The complications of stoma are seen with a wide spectrum of problems to the ostomates. There are several factors which are related to the incidence of complications, for example, patients operated in the emergency will have a higher incidence of complication because they may not have had adequate preoperative preparations. The type of complications also depends upon the types of stoma. Ileostomies are associated with higher incidence of skin complications and leakage, while colostomies are associated with higher incidence of odor, prolapse and parastomal hernia. Stomal necrosis, retraction, peristomal skin irritation, parastomal abscess, ulcer, and fistula, parastomal hernia, stricture, caput medusa, mucosal implants, stomal prolapse, bleeding and peristomal varices, diversion colitis, constipation, etc. are the most complications which are covered thoroughly in this chapter. Tips for prevention, early deduction and management of simple complications are also discussed in this chapter.
