A prescription is a written order from a registered medical practitioner containing one or more medicines together with the directions of preparation and dispensation to the pharmacist and mode of administration for the patient. Patient’s particulars, superscription, inscription, subscription, signature or transcription, initial of the prescriber, and date are the different parts of complete prescription. A Table on types of prescription is also given in this chapter which is self-explanatory. Commonly used abbreviations in prescriptions are also listed in this chapter. Points to note for criticism of a prescription and an example of prescription criticism are also presented in this chapter.
