Vitamins are naturally occurring organic substances. Most of the metabolic reactions require coenzyme forms of the vitamins to catalyze the reactions. They serve nearly the same roles in all forms of life. The daily requirement of any vitamin depends on a number of factors and may increase during growth, pregnancy and lactation. The vitamins are divided into fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) and water soluble vitamins (B complex) and vitamin C. Dietary deficiency of vitamins results in many symptoms. For example vitamin A deficiency leads to night blindness, D deficiency results in rickets in children, K deficiency: clotting disorder, C deficiency: scurvy, B complex deficiency results in dermatitis (niacin), magenta colored tongue( riboflavin), Anemia (folic acid).
