Abstract

The success in assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures and its reproducibility depend highly on integrated, high efficiency laboratory activities which consistently provide acceptable results. Close coordination and frequent interaction between the team members to discuss the best possible strategy for each patient’s protocol help achieve this goal. An ART facility should be set-up and operated with a sense of respect, sincerity and dedication because “New Life” originates here with the help of live raw materials, i.e. sperm and egg. Recent years have seen tremendous proliferation in the number of ART centers. Consideration should, therefore, be given before starting any such facility to certain points like consumer demand, i.e. total area population, approach and connectivity for patient’s convenience as well as for ensuring regular supply of materials. The intent of this chapter is to highlight relevant points for establishing an ART unit after understanding the basic requirement and scientific concepts responsible for the successful performance of the laboratory. Establishing an ART facility requires proper attention to the following: (i) Personnel—Staff, (ii) Design and environment, (iii) Equipments, (iv) Quality control. Summary of equipment and consumables required in setting up an IVF center are described in this chapter.
