Abstract

It is a difficult station especially at trainee level, as most of times in real life situation these are done by seniors. Therefore whenever you have a situation where your senior or consultant is breaking bad news to the patient, just watch their approach, words used and body language. Understand the non-verbal language and gestures of the patient. Have patience and do not hurry-up. If they are weeping give tissue or glass of water and maintain silence for few seconds. Ask if they need their partner or family member to be with them? Express sympathy; say you are sorry about the situation. Find out how much they know about the condition and how much they want to know. Try to end conversation with further plan of action and follow-up. Give them some phone number of department to contact if they have any concerns. Provide them the help of support group. Avoid giving any percentages and guarantees.
