Abstract

This chapter discusses biomechanics of Illizarov ring fixator. Biomechanics of the Ilizarov external fixator has been extensively studied, clinically and experimentally by Ilizarov, Flamingo, and Paley, Kristiansen, Pope and many others. Mainly there are two types of external fixators, such as Cantilever type and Ilizarov type. Comparison of monolateral with ring fixator, biomechanics of the wire, biomechanics of rings, biomechanics of fulcrums, and biomechanics of hinges are also cover in this chapter. This chapter also discusses the biomechanics of titanium pins and hybrid mountings, biomechanics of stopper-wire/inclined-rod method. The stopper-wire/inclined-rod method entails using stopper wires that pierce the projectile cortices and are fastened only on one end to inclined threaded rods mounted on a hinged support.
