Abstract

This chapter discusses evidence-based medicine and research. Evidence-based medicine is defined as “the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of the individual patient. It means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research. Earlier the evidence-based medicine mainly focused on the determination of the best investigation of evidence which is pertinent to a medical judgment and pertaining that proof to resolve the problem. Evidence-based medicine is a systematic approach to finding and analyzing published data as the basis of clinical decision making. The hierarchy of evidence is one of the fundamentals of evidence-based medicine.
