Abstract

This chapter presents a brief discussion on Fractures of the Humerus. The humerus proximally forms the shoulder which is an inherently unstable joint and distally it forms the elbow, an inherently stable and restricted joint. Both of these joints are prone to severe stiffness following immobilization. There has been considerable controversy generated about the optimum mode of management of fractures of the humeral diaphysis. Conservative management has a role to play and should be a part of the surgeon’s choices, and that understanding the basis of management using a functional brace. Observe a primary radial nerve injury associated with a closed humeral fracture, unless fracture dictates otherwise. Results of early surgery are no better than results of delayed intervention. Loss of fixation happens more frequently with plating than with nailing or external fixation. Suboptimal surgical technique, weak implants, and poor bony purchase mainly because of osteoporosis have been recognized as the main reasons for this problem.
