Abstract

This chapter discusses on dislocations and ligamentous injuries. Ligamentous injuries of the hand have been a rather neglected area of hand injuries. Collateral ligament injuries as also dislocations of the terminal interphalangeal joint are rare. More common injuries associated with this joint are avulsion fractures. Crushing injuries with dislocations are highly unstable and need additional K-wire stabilization for varying periods. The collateral ligament of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint is a sturdy structure made of two distinct portions namely the proper and the accessory collateral ligament. Eaton’s classification is based on the dorsal displacement of the middle phalanx producing specific lesions of the ligament system and briefly described in this chapter. This chapter also covers metacarpophalangeal joint (MP), injuries of the ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb, treatment of incomplete acute tears, complete acute tears and gamekeepers thumb, radial collateral ligament injuries, and thumb carpometacarpal joint in detail.
