Abstract

Extensor tendon injuries are more common than flexor tendons because of their superficial location on the dorsum of the hand. Due to a superficial location under the skin and paucity of subcutaneous tissue extensor tendon injuries are often associated with soft tissue defects and fractures, further complicating the management and expected outcome. Extensor tendon injuries can be classified as open or closed. Open injuries are caused by cut injuries or crush injuries and the closed rupture is caused by forced passive flexion or sudden extension against resistance. Closed injuries have a high likelihood of being missed resulting in deformities which can be challenging to treat. Anatomy of extensor tendons, general guidelines for repair, zones of injury, zone-specific considerations and their management are the important topics which are covered in this chapter. Thumb being the most important of all digits needs special attention to its extensor tendon injury. The zones of thumb extensor injury differ from fingers because of one less phalanx. The details of the splinting and rehabilitation are discussed in this chapter along with the management of the extensor tendons in specific zones.
