Abstract

Nails are an important part of the hand and they serve multiple purposes. Primarily they are similar to the claws in other animals serving in defense and for scratching. The nail protects the fingertip and contributes to tactile sensation and precise touch by providing counter pressure between the nail and the pulp. Two-point discrimination frequently doubles when the nail is loss. Abnormal nails are problematic both functionally as well as cosmetically especially when fingertip injuries are mismanaged. This chapter aims to cover a brief discussion on anatomy, physiology, injuries, deformities and infections of the nail.
