Hand has 5 metacarpals and 14 phalanges. They have a head, shaft and a base. Joints in the hand include proximal and distal interphalangeal joints (PIP, DIP), metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints and carpometacarpal (CMC) joints. A joint arthrodesis should only be considered when all other options have been expended or found not feasible for providing a painless mobile joint. The various conditions where arthrodesis of the hand joints may be considered are tabulated in this chapter. A number of surgical techniques have been described to attain successful arthrodesis of the joints using implants ranging from the ubiquitous K-wire, to locking plates. Oblique osteotomy technique, chevron arthrodesis, cup and cone arthrodesis, and tenon method are the surgical techniques described in this chapter. A broad discussion on arthrodesis of individual joints has been also provided in this chapter which includes interphalangeal joints arthrodesis, steinmann pin arthrodesis, screw fixation, MCP joint, CMC joint arthrodesis, etc.
