Abstract

This chapter discusses scurvy and other vitamin-related disorders. Scurvy is a disorder which is known since time immemorial. It is a nutritional disorder due to the lack of vitamin C. It occurs in both children and adults and is associated with a wide variety of symptoms. Vitamin C is an essential nutrient in order to hydroxylate proline and lysine which is a very important step in collagen formation. Sources and Requirements of Vitamin C, Clinical Features, Differential Diagnosis, Adult Scurvy, and treatment of scurvy are also discussed in this chapter. Scurvy is very rarely encountered in adults. Clinical signs and symptoms of scurvy are seen only after prolonged periods of vitamin C deficiency. Treatment of scurvy is by oral vitamin C in the dose of 500 mg twice daily for a period of 3–4 weeks depending on the extent of involvement.
