Abstract

This chapter discusses on the endoscopic discectomy. Endoscopic discectomy combines the advantages of both microdiscectomy and endoscopic procedure. The reduced dimension of access route minimizes muscular trauma and postoperative pain; this considerably facilitates the rapid resumption of physical activities and faster return to work. Transforaminal endoscopic discectomy is done by posterolateral transforaminal approach accessing the herniated disc through intervertebral foramen and the procedure is limited to certain types of disc herniations. Endospine operating tube with an obturator, endospine working insert, localization device, endoscopic Kerrison punches 3 mm 90 degree and 45 degree, trephine, disc forceps, endoscopic bipolar coagulating forceps, chisel 15 mm, etc. are the equipment and instrumentation of the endoscopic discectomy. Preoperative preparation and surgical technique are two different surgery for endoscopic discectomy. 11 well-colored figures are also provided in this chapter.
