Abstract

This chapter describes the spondylolisthesis. Spondylolisthesis was recognized in 1782 by a Belgium Obstetrician Herbinaux when he noted a bony prominence in front of the sacrum. Approximately 5–6% of males and 2–3% of females have a spondylolisthesis. It becomes apparent more often in people who are involved with very physical activities such as weightlifting, gymnastics, or football. The main focus of this chapter is on the history of spondylolisthesis, the prevalence of spondylolisthesis, etiology of spondylolisthesis, classification of spondylolisthesis, clinical features of spondylolisthesis, imaging of spondylolisthesis, biomechanics of spondylolisthesis, the natural history of spondylolisthesis, conservative management of spondylolisthesis and operative management of spondylolisthesis. 12 well-labeled figures are also provided in this chapter.
