Abstract

This chapter describes the complications in spine surgery. Spine surgery has been notoriously given a bad name, owing to the neurological complications, that ensue in some of the cases. The complications can be subdivided into general and regional complications, with each region being tackled individually. Surgical site infections, deep vein thrombosis and spine surgery, bone graft donor site complications, positioning-related complications and eye complications are the general complications of spine surgery. Approach-related complications, neurological complications, vascular complications and esophageal perforation are the complications of the cervical spine. The major neurological deficit, C5 palsy, incidental durotomy, thoracic duct injury and implant-related complications are the technique-related complications of the spine surgery. Neural injury, nerve root injuries, cauda equina syndrome and unintended durotomy are the complications in thoracic spine surgery. Four well-labeled figures are also provided in this chapter.
